Metal Toxicity:
how to recognize it; how to resolve it.
for more information, click here
Toxic metals are metals that are poisonous soluble compounds that have no biological role, i.e., they are not essential minerals OR they are not in forms that are bio-available OR they are in forms that toxic to the body.
Dfferent substances may have different structures, ie., magnesium has 12 different forms, but only 3 forms are bio-available. On the other hand Magnesium stearate reduces absorption of whatever it is involved in. So lets look at some of the metal concerns:
1) The most common heavy metal toxins are:
- Aluminum
- Arsenic
- Cadium
- Lead
- Mercury
2) You can be more vulnerable to toxins because:
- Genetic predispositions
- Chronic conditions
3) It can be difficult to eliminate the toxins:
- Due to genetic predispositions (i.e., APO-E 4/3 & 4/4 genotypes are more susceptible to metal toxicities, like mercury)
- If you have chronic conditions
4) People who accumulate more than one metal toxicity will have an accumulative compound effect more than those who fail to eliminate only one kind of metal toxicity (i.e., synergistic toxicity according to Dr. Boyd Hayley of UofK).
5) Common Signs & Symptoms in general (for specific metals, go further down):
- Anemia
- Arthritis
- Brain fog & dementias
- Brain & liver damage
- Cancer
- Chronic infections
- Chronic malaise (through general discomfort, fatique and illness)
- Chronic pain (through muscle, tendons & soft tissues)
- Depression
- Developmental issues: ADHD, slow learning, etc.
- Dizziness
- Fibromyalgia
- Fibrocystic breast disease (from caffeine)
- Food allergies
- Gastrointestinal complaints (diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, heartburn,
- indigestion)
- Migraines and/or headaches
- Mood swings, depression, and/or anxiety
- Nervous system malfunctions – burning extremities, numbness, tingling paralysis,
- and/or an electrifying feeling throughout the body
- Osteoporosis
- PMS
- Visual disturbances
6) Symptoms associated with some individual metal toxins:
a) Arsenic
- nausea
- abdominal pain
- cutis edema
- diarrhea
- excessive salivation
- eyelid edema
- fatigue
- garlic odor on breath
- headache
- increased pigmentation of palms & soles
- kidney failure
- limb paralysis
- mental impairment
- mottled brown skin
- paresthesia
- paralysis
- perforation of nasal septum
- progressive blindness
- vertigo
-
mental signs: apathy, dementia, anorexia
b) Lead
- Abdominal pain
- Adrenal fatique/insufficiency
- Chronic renal failure
- Cognitive dysfunction
- Constipation
- Convulsion
- Fatique
- Gastrointestinal complaints
- Gout
- Headache
- Hemolytic anemia
- Hypertension
- Hypothyroid
- Impotence
- Irritability
- Loss of libido
- Nausea
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Weight loss
- mental symptoms: anxiety, cognitive dysfunctions, confusions, delusions, depression, disturbing dreams, excitement, restlessness
-
c) Mercury
- Excess salivation
- Gingivigis
- Metallic taste in mouth
- Stomach & Kidney problems
- Tremors
- Mental symptoms: anorexia, apathy and depression, irritability, mental deterioration, psychosis, shyness

Copper toxicity is a huge factor in the higher incidence of Autism in children as well as ADD (attention deficit disorder) as well as teen depression, Bipolar, and even Schizophrenia.
Common Causes of Metal Toxicity:
Acute exposure:
- Vaccinations that contain thimerosal (mercury preservative)
- Mishandled metals at the job site
-
Chemical & heavy metal spills
Chronic exposure:
- Fillings/amalgams
- Skin whitening products that contain mercury (11) chloride
- Anti-per spirants with aluminum
- Florescent lamps
- Living in a home with paints older than 1978
- Smoking and/or inhaling second hand smoke
- Eating contaminated foods (i.e., fish with mercury)
- Living near a landfill
-
Working in an environment where exposure is prevalent (i.e., dentist’s office)
Treatment:
a. Chelation factors:
i. Glutahtione accelerators: oral or nutrition glutathione is of no value as there are no transporters across the cellular membrane. Glutathione has to be made inside each and every cell of the body
- 1. Glutathione is a major chelator in the body
- It is made in every cell of the body
- Hugely important for toxins like mercury & aluminum
- 2. Therefore you have to use glutathione accelerators (for more information go to (http://choicesunlimited.ca/content/max-glutathione-accelerator-0)
ii. The following nutrients have been historically used to diminish metal toxicity and its' efforts:
1. Vitamins
- a. Vitamin C
- b. Vitamin E
2. Specific molecules
- a. Alpha lipoic acid (ALA)
- b. Bioflavonoids
- c. CoQ10
- d. L-cysteine
- e. L-methionine
- f. NAC – N-Acetyl-Cysteine
3. Botanicals
- a. Cilantro
- b. Ginkgo biloba
- c. Hawthorne berry
- d. Kale
- e. Pinus maritima (OPC)
b) Additional issues that need to be addressed:
- regeneratingifferent collagens in different connective tissues
- reestablishing nutrient absorption in a body that no longer absorbs nutrients
- recreating transport systems to absorb nutrients
