EWG has a list of both the most toxic and the most clean foods that are available. Click here and you will go straight to that site…
While we definitely want to provide our families with the cleaniest, healthiest foods, we don’t necessarily have to spend the extra monies on everything.
While I appreciate all the growers who are willing to stand up to the big corporations and provide us with good healthy foods – there are a few concerns:
- many farmers are finding that their soils produce much better crops when they don’t use all the fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, etc – so it is cheaper for them – why is it more expensive for us?
- the term “organic” has been misused and abused – so it isn’t always want we think it is
- toxins can be found in the air; the water; and the soil; never mind what is sprayed onto the plants
Ultimately we need to go back to growing our own foods, vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices…many you can grow on your windowsill…many can be started from what you buy in the store, ie., the roots of celery or onions or a clove of garlic.
If you live in an apartment, condo or townhouse that doesn’t have space – work with a community garden OR establish a vegetable garden in amongst the flowering gardens.
Community gardens provide a place to make friends and find a team to plant, weed and garden with – it will make gardening fun.
Your food will have:
- less toxin
- more nutrient
- and more flavor
and you can pickle or ferment the excesses.
