There are a variety of curries, yellow, green and red are the predominant categories…but there are all kinds of recipes to make curry.  The basic ingredient to all of them is Turmeric.Dr Hoilly Ginger-turmeric  It is one phenomenal herb that has a huge amount of science behind it, i.e., over 6000 peer review studies.  In fact, turmeric works as good as OR better than all kinds of Western, synthetic, artificial pharmaceutical drugs.  Can turmeric cause side effects…well yet it can IF it is grown in toxic soils or if extremely large amounts are taken.    Let’s take at what some of the research says:

1. Anti-inflammatories

Anti-inflammatories whether prescription or over the counter drugs (like sulindac, naproxen, celecoxib, tamoxifen, phenylbutazone, and ibuprofen) deplete the body of nutrients and can cause all kinds of side effects including death.  But Turmeric  works as well as OR even better than these drugs.  The challenge with turmeric today, is that so much of it is grown in toxic soils AND it is difficult to absorb turmeric.  It needs to be combined with healthy fats and pepper for effective absorption.  Chronic inflammation is the Silent Killer (click here to read:  Inflammation:  The Silent Killer)

2.  Blood Thinners/Anti-coagulants/Anti-platelets

Turmeric is also a blood thinner.  MDs can prescribe a variety of artificial synthetic Pharmaceutical drugs (Aspirin, Plavix, Diclofenac, Ibuprofen, Lovenox, Naproxen, and Warfarin)  which can usually manage this clotting.  The problem is that these drugs not only deplete the body of nutrients and add in toxins, but they can also cause deterioration of the stomach lining, which can promote ulcers and digestive issues; bleeding & hemorrhage; back pain, and other issues.  There is now a lot of controversy now,  over the use of even baby aspirin as a blood thinner.  So how does turmeric work?  A compound in turmeric, curcumin, stops the clumping of platelets which cause the problem.  Which would you rather choose?  The use of REAL natural compounds or synthetic nutrient depleting compounds?  Researchers are also suggesting that turmeric is actually a better option for vascular thrombosis…(click here for more information about Myths and Misconceptions of the Heart)

3.  Pain Killers

As noted, curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory – which may be why it is also effective as a pain killer.  There are all kinds of pain killers.  Turmeric has been shown to be more effective than aspirin and other over the counter painkillers.  It works well for rheumatoid arthritis without putting people at risk like Diclofenac sodium (can cause leaky guy syndrome and heart disease).  A 2012 article found in Phytotherapy Research, showed that when they compared:

  • Curcumin only
  • Curcumin combined with Diclofenac sodiumDr Holly pharam gets customers
  • Diclofenac sodium

Curcumin alone worked the best!!  Further, curcumin didn’t have the negative side effects or any adverse events.  For more information about the different types of inflammation in your body, read:  Inflammation:  the silent killer

4. Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are usually used for issues like:  Psoriasis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma and chronic pain.

Corticosteroids are a synthetic pharmaceutical replacement of a natural hormone compound in the body.  As the case whenever, man tries to replicate nature, we find that corticosteroids have a wide number of side effects including:  oral thrush/fungal infection in your mouth (inhaled corticosteroids); joint pain &/or swelling; stomach irritation; rapid heartbeat; nausea; insomnia; metallic taste in the mouth; fatty deposits on the skin; bone deterioration; diabetes,  etc

In a Chinese study, curcumin was found to be as effective as the steroid drug dexamethasone.  And of course, like most drugs, they deplete vital nutrients in the body.

4. Statin drugs – anti-cholesterols/Lipitor/Atorvastatin

Statin drugs are designed to inhibit an enzyme required to make cholesterol.  The whole cholesterol myth needs to be addressed first and can be found in Your Heart: Are you taking care of it.   But regardless of how important cholesterol is to the body;  the fact that diet has little impact on cholesterol levels OR the fact that liver makes over 80% of this important compound, MDs that have been taught the cholesterol myth and continue to prescribe this drug.  These anti-cholesterol drugs not only prevent the body from making cholesterol BUT also prevent the body from making CoQ10 – hugely important to every cell in the body and each cell’s capacity to make fuel.

There are numerous foods and herbs that are effective in regulating all the different types of cholesterols in the body…note:  there are many types of HDL and even more types of LDL!!  Now, one thing you might want to think about is that:  since the patent for Lipitor–one of the most financially successful statin patents–expired in 2011, the number of lawsuits initiated against its manufacturer Pfizer has reached into the thousands?

Lipitor and other statin drugs have a number of side effects including:   Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, liver failure, kidney failure and ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease). Dr Holly good fats in a heart

Even a low daily dose of curcumin lowers LDL and total cholesterol.

5. Diabetes (Metformin)

Again, there are many herbs and foods that are effective in eliminating diabetes…first off, you have to determine what is causing the raised blood glucose levels or insulin and/or fructose resistance…is it the gut, the liver, the adrenals or the pancreas.  The pancreas is the last in a long process of blood glucose regulation.  So often, diabetes can be eliminated by addressing one of the prior issues rather than focusing on the last issues, ie., insulin resistance and the pancreas.   Now, if you are interested in fixing the foundation of the problem, rather managing the leaky roof, then there are all kinds of solutions to diabetes.  Turmeric is one of them AND curcumin is 400 to ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND TIMES better than metformin.

[6] It acts by lowering glucose levels in the blood.   (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19665995)

Metformin can cause:  lactic acidosis, fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness, chills, blue/cold skin, muscle pain, fast breathing, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea

Turmeric (curcumin) not only reverses diabetes, but also reverses the additional issues caused by diabetes;  damaged blood vessels, blindness, etc

6. Cancer : Oxaliplatin (Chemotherapy)

There are all kinds of cancers and all kinds of natural treatments that have been proven effective.  I eliminated my ovarian tumor (the size of a hard ball) in 3.5 weeks using a betalaine diet.  But turmeric has been shown to be very effective for a number of different types of cancers.  It stops the growth of various cancers and actually reverses others.  (Cancer Research, UK).  While the Am Cancer Society claims that curcumin interferes with cancer development, growth and spread…curcumin has received a great deal of focus because of it’s ability to reduce tumor size and kill cancer cells.   For more information on all kinds of cancer causes and treatments, Cancer: Why what you don’t know about your treatment could harm you.

Curcumin works as well as this  man-made chemical in arresting colorectal cancer:  “curcumin may be of use in therapeutic regimes directed against colorectal cancer, and suggests that in combination with oxaliplatin it may enhance efficacy of the latter.” (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19665995)

Think about it….if curcumin can enhance the efficacy of the drug; if curcumin is better and has no side effects, why even bother with “the latter”?

7. Anti-depressants/Prozac/Fluoxetine and Imipramine

WOW – both in animal studies and in human studies, Curcumin has proven to be just as effective as Prozac (so have a number of other herbs, ie., St John’s Wort – studies using a poor grade of St John’s Wort for a reduced time period showed that it was just as effective as Prozac – imagine what might have happened if they used a good grade, in proper amounts for the proper time period?)  See articles in Phytotherapy Research

As noted: “curcumin may be used as an effective and safe modality for treatment in patients with MDD [major depressive disorder] without concurrent suicidal ideation or other psychotic disorders.” (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23832433)

Did you know that low serotonin levels have never been shown to cause depression, nor has serotonin regulating drugs ever been proven to eliminate depression, which is why you are never given a blood test for depression…but for all kinds of information about all the physiological causes of depression and all the different remedies, click here:  Depression: the real cause may be in your body.

8. Gut issues/Gastrointestinal treatments

There are a variety of issues that can cause digestive and stomach complaints…most of your immune system is found in the gut which can impact on the rest of your body.  In addition, we have now shown that depletion or ineffective ratios or gut bacteria can cause all kinds of issues, not only in the gut, but throughout the whole body and brain.  The anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric/curcumin can help heal the inflammatory system in the gut and support good microbiota…which can then have a huge impact on the rest of the body.  For more information, read:  Are You What You Eat:  Why your intestines are the foundation of good health.

BUT Turmeric can have side effects too.  If the dose is too high OR if it is grown in toxic soils…then we can have the following kinds of symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Increased risk of bleeding
  • Increased liver function tests
  • Hyperactive gallbladder contractions
  • Hypotension (lowered blood pressure)
  • Uterine contractions in pregnant women
  • Increased menstrual flow

So, the best option, is to go a good health practitioner who can access high quality turmeric and know what combination to put it into…Get to the source of the problem and resolve that…then enjoy good health!!!

Here’s to your health!
