No marshmallow root is nothing like the candy marshmallows that you roast over an open fire. Althea officinalis or marshmallow root is a herb known for its mucilage that is full of polysaccrides. So what do those terms mean and how do they impact on our bodies?
Mucilage is a thick, glue type substance found in most plants. It is both used as storage and to support/maintain membranes. Various types of succulent or cactus tend to have high levels of mucilage, as well as, flax seeds. At this point, we are focused on the type of mucilage found in marshmallow root.
It is known to help protect the mucous membranes in the body and in particular in the gut, by providing a type of salve over irritated, inflamed or ulcerative membranes, allowing the membrane to heal. The root mucilage is known to work anywhere in the body, whereas the leaf mucilage only works in the gastro-intestinal tract.
No side effects, no contraindications, safe and healthy. Now isn’t that better than synthetic drugs that cause harm and side effects to the body.
Yup, REAL medicine wins again…
