Did you know that asthma has hit epidemic levels worldwide?  Shouldn’t be surprising when we stop and think a minute. With all the pollutants in the air (never mind the soil, food, hygiene products and cleaning products that we use)!!

But did you also know that researchers claim that between 50-80% of asthma is due to allergies? Everything from dust to mites to mould to pollens, AND food allergies, can cause asthmatic reactions.

Now here comes the cruncher…did you know that most people who have asthma also have low levels of Vitamins A, C, and E? Further, those who have greater deficiencies have more severe reactions!

On the other hand, those of us who eat diet rich in whole real foods (all the red foods, green foods and orange foods) have significantly lower levels of asthma.

Why? Well all of our coloured whole organic foods are rich in anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients. One particular group of compounds that are essential for healthy lungs are the flavonoids which are predominantly anti-oxidants. Oxidative stress is huge in people with asthma.2015-08-11 20.46.20

Studies done in countries as far apart as Finland and Australia have shown that when people consume higher amounts of anti-oxidants in their diet, they have fewer asthmatic symptoms.

There is conflict however, with Vitamin E – too much gamma-tocopherol can benefit acute inflammation by recruiting the eosinophils (much needed white blood cell) whereas the alpha-tocopherol Vitamin E did the opposite. But in chronic asthmatic sufferers, alpha-tocopherol acted as an anti-inflammatory and gamma-tocopherol acted as a pro-inflammatory that increased hypersensitivity in the airways.

Another conflict found was that when high levels of Vitamin E were taken alone, then they can have a pro-oxidant affect (as opposed to anti-oxidant) and it can reduce CoQ10 levels in the blood (needed for fuel in the cells).

Glutathione is huge when it comes to the anti-oxidants. By far the most powerful anti-oxidant in the body and needs to be synthesized/manufactured in the body. It usually breaks down in the gut and we lose important components. On the other hand, even if it didn’t break down, it is too large to cross the cellular membrane.  Learn how to make sure the cellular components working effectively so your cells can regulate and make the all important glutathione.
