What is WebMD – the second most visited health site on the World Wide Web – positioning itself as a primary source of “independent and science-backed health information”.
Sounds good. Until you read that it was financially dependent on pharmaceutical companies – WHOOPS!! Big red flag.
Now to make matters even worse, it has received a $4.8 million contract from the government. Now, if we could trust our governments to be honorable, integral, responsible…that might be a good thing. But how many of the US senators are represent pharmaceutical companies and/or GMO companies? All you have to do is look at the Venn diagrams to see that who they are backed by (http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20111221/17561617164/)
Now the government is claiming that the monies are to be utilized to educate doctors about the Affordable Care Act. OK Sounds good – but again do you think the data presented is going to be a little biased?
Further, there are various accusations that WebMD has been caught promoting dangerous drugs to people who don’t need the drugs – who does this benefit – Big Pharma, of course, who are providing the funds the run the site!!
Or how about when Eli Lilly provided WebMD a screening test for depression that only provided one answer – you’re at risk (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/webmds-depression-test-has-only-one-sponsored-answer-youre-at-risk/)
But it gets even worse…WebMD is also partnered with the FDA (who of course is also funded by Big Pharma), so where is the public protected? Provided independent health information? Who is providing you with real honest research?
